Since his suicide in 1994 Kurt Cobain has become defined by his death.
Millions of posters, patches, sweatshirts, badges and other
assorted Nirvana merchandise carry the self--depreciating quote that has become his unofficial slogan :
I hate myself and I want to die.
In hindsight, his fate is generally considered inevitable. What could be more conventional than a young, angry rock star destroying
himself? It is an old story..
But this is unfair. It is unfair to Cobain, to the wife and child he left behind, to his parents, to his family, and to the friends who tried to help him..
In the aftermath of the suicide there was little attempt to understand why it happened. Few tried to explain what drove a successful, attractive 27 year old man with a daughter he loved and millions of fans worldwide to remove himself so violently from the world.
